  1. Bible: Error free or full of error?

November 29, 2010 by Britten Taylor

I am not sure how many of you have seen the recent report from “Project Reason” that was accompanied with a pretty shnazzy infrographic…but it is supposedly an “incredible testament to the power of data visualization” which is suppose to show the Bible to be “silly”.

The thought is that this is idiot free…a visual of all 439 contradictions in the Bible. “You’ve got bars at the bottom representing the 1,189 verses of the King James Bible. White’s for the Old Testament, gray’s for the New Testament. Then a red arc links all the verses that contradict each other.”

    Got it, stupid?

The goal of the project? …”So to anyone who thinks the Bible’s the last word on anything, remember this: It isn’t even the last word on itself”

    Got it, stupid?

Let’s get serious, just a brief run through of the supposed contradictions is laughable….

#2: Was Abraham justified by faith or works: Romans 4:2, James 2:21

    Wow

(Side note: Read this pretty humorous post by Doug Wilson where he randomly picks contradictions #208 and #211 and shows how there is in fact NO contradiction.)

Now, the reason for this blog post is not to explain why this “stunning, provocative infographic” is a pile of crap!  Nor is it an exhaustive explanation/argumentation on why you should believe the Bible, not only to be authoritative in your life, but to be completely without error. We dont have enough space on this blog, you dont have enough time to read it, and we dont have the time or brain power to pull it off.  But I can point you to some pretty amazing resources that could help you wade through this in an intellectually honest way (that was a purposeful shot at Project Reason!)

The good news is that many trees have been cut down to produce the paper for the books written on this subject. Good news for you and me, bad news for the trees. I mention the plethora of books because I dont want you to have any unrealistic expectations for this blog post…such as this feeble college minister will be able to offer anything new to the discussion. BUT, no need to fear, I think I can point you to a few resources!

    Drum Roll please….

10 Resources to help you stand firm when it comes to the trustworthy, authoritative, and inerrant Word of God!

    10. A Much better Cross-Reference Infographic! This in no way proves the reliability of Scripture, but it does give us a clear picture of the unity, harmony and consistency of the Bible. (HT: Resurgence)

    9. Why I trust the Scriptures teaching by John Piper. Block out an hour and a half of your life. Sit down with pen/paper and your Bible and listen to this. Soak it up, and when you are done…get down on your knees and worship the God who has revealed Himself and preserved His Word for us to know Him accurately! (side note: you can also get the DVD teaching HERE)

    8. “When Critics Ask” by Norman Geisler: This resource will give you a clear and concise answer to every major Bible difficulty from Genesis to Revelation. A great resource for you to have on your bookshelf in an increasingly post-Christian culture.

    7. “What is Scripture” blog series at Resurgence. A great series of posts by Justin Holcombe tracing key figures throughout Church History and their view of the Doctrine of Scripture. If you hold to the trustworthiness of Scripture…you are in good company!

    6. The Erosion of Inerrancy in Evangelicalism” by G.K. Beale. A very thorough defense on the truth of Scripture. Warning: this is not a light hearted read. You can and will get bogged down at points, but it is still worth the investment of your money and time.

    5. The Case for Christ and The Case for Faith by Lee Stobel: These books are not necessarily entirely focused on the trustworthiness of Scripture, but they were both a huge help for me in my personal growth toward confidence in God’s Word. Both books address the major objections to Christianity, which obviously include attacks on the nature and content of the Bible, by interviewing leading evangelical scholars.

    4. Biblical Authority sermon by Don Carson. The leading New Testament scholar doing a stellar job of defending the authority and trustworthiness of Scripture. Listen to this.

    3. ESV Study Bible: Articles and Resources: If you have the ESV study Bible you have one of the greatest resources in your hand in the history of the Church. And I am not exaggerating to make a point. As you read the copy of Scriptures daily…take time also to clobber the articles and resources in the back of the Study Bible. I just read through the titles of the Articles and was blown away at the content. You definitely need to read them.

    2. Chicago Statement of Biblical Inerrancy: It’s always frustrating to me when those who dog the doctrine and the theological term “inerrancy” either purposefully misrepresent the doctrine or have little/no understanding of what is meant by those who hold to it. Take the time to read THE best explanation of evangelical Christian belief about the trustworthiness of the Bible.

    1. The Bible: Seriously, just read the Bible. This is not earth-shattering. I agree with one man who said you don’t defend a lion in a cage. You just let that bad boy out! (I dont think he used the phrase- “bad-boy”, but you get the idea here) As with the Bible…don’t feel like you need to stand beside the Bible and defend it.  Just read it. Get your skeptic friend to read it. You study it day and night. You get your skeptic friend to study it day and night. And let the Word of God defend itself! Our confidence is not based on the argumentation, but upon the sight the Spirit of God gives us through repentance/faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior!

  4. Crazy world, new name, and great commands.

    by Britten Taylor

A blog post written by a recent college grad from The Church at Brook Hills who is serving overseas in a unreached context and a hostile environment.  She is working alongside a team that is seeking to take the Gospel to those who have little to no access. Read, be challenged, and then pray for her and her team.

I’ve been here before, but these last three weeks have been very different from the first three I spent here a couple years ago. There is something very different about visiting a place and actually settling in to live there. All of a sudden I can’t imagine ever living anywhere else. After the initial shock of wondering what have I gotten myself into, a peace that can only be from Him settles in. Things that would be so out of place in America are everyday occurrences here. I think we make the news there a lot, but no one ever hears about it here unless we read BBC news on the internet!

Everyday is a new adventure. It’s not usually dangerous things, though there is the occasional dispute among locals. Mostly it’s just everyday adventures with some of the most hospitable people in the world: eating a local breakfast dish with our language teacher while sitting on the kitchen floor of our school, meeting new women on the 30 minute public transportation ride home from school, or playing the guitar for my neighbor who stops in the hallway to listen to me. I still have good moments everyday when I smile and think “I can’t believe I’m really here.”

And everyday I remind myself again why I am here. I preach to myself Romans 8:32…He has given His Son for me and will surely give me every other thing that is truly good. Or John 15…as we abide in Him, He will produce much fruit through this branch, those of us working here.

I’ve even been renamed by a local friend…Noorah. In the language it means ‘light’. Talk about a reminder of why I am here! His light needs to shine brightly in this spiritually dark country. The expressions of their longing for a true relationship with Him ring out five times a day from the minarets around the city.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment and the second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” It was easy to lose this focus in my comfortable life in America. I felt at times much more useful in the Kingdom when I was there and involved in church, small group, and witnessing to my unbelieving friends at my job.

It’s not quite as glamorous here, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. He is giving me the best thing I could ask for in a new way here: more of Himself! And that is the one thing needed wherever He puts us. I am thankful for the privilege of knowing Him and making Him known here.

  5. Why Go Global?

November 10, 2010 by Britten Taylor
Here are a few thoughts for you this month as to why you should seriously consider taking a few weeks, months or even years of your life to engage in reaching the unreached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ…

    1. To glorify God…He is infinitely worthy!

All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. Psalm 86:9

Missions is not the ultimate goal of the Church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t. John Piper

    2. To obey Jesus…He commands (not suggests) us to take the Gospel to all peoples!

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation. Mark 16:15

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Psalm 67:1-2

    3. To bring Joy to the nations…There is urgency in our mission!

Remember Mr. Nyi (from “Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret“)

Mr. Nyi, a recent convert from China: “How long have you had the Glad Tidings (ie, Gospel) in England?”

The young missionary was ashamed to tell him.

Hudson Taylor vaguely replied, “It was several hundreds of years.”

Mr. Nyi: “What???…Several hundreds of years!… Is it possible that you have known about Jesus so long, and only now have come to tell us? My father sought the truth for more than twenty years,” he continued sadly, ” and died without finding It. Oh, why did you not come sooner?”

    Remember the Staggering Statistics

+6.7 billion people in the world. More than 1 Billion have little to NO access to the Gospel.

+The Gospel is only good news if you get there in time.” -Carl F.H. Henry.

    Remember the Golden Rule

+So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12

+Knowing the saving power of the Gospel…If you were living among an unreached people group with no access to the Gospel, would you want someone who had the Gospel to bring it to you?

    Remember the Harvest Principle

+Then He (Jesus) said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Matthew 9:37-38

+The need is great, but the workers are few. Will you pray that God would raise up more workers, and ask Him to do so to you?

  6. A typical week of College Ministry!

November 5, 2010 by Britten Taylor

I am frequently blown away in total amazement at the work of Christ in and through college students here at Brook Hills. This week is no different.

I am sitting here on a Friday afternoon floored by all that I have heard of and experienced this week….

    Need examples?

I got this email from a college small group leader-

I shared the Gospel with my apartment manager today.  Lunch was fantastic.  I shared the entire Gospel from creation with Becky (not real name).  She had a lot of questions and played “the devil’s advocate” as she says: ).   It’s hard for her to believe that Jesus just reconciles us to God. She wanted to know who reconciles us to Jesus…which, I thought was an interesting question.  She grew up Catholic, so she is driven by doing good deeds.  The Gospel SHATTERS that.  Anyway, she said she was “all ears” and she really wanted to hear what I had to say.  She even said that she thought us meeting was “part of the plan” of God.  I gave her “Radical” last Thursday, and she’s already on page 35!  Here’s the really cool part:  She agreed to meet with me once a week to study the Bible!!!  She wants me to send her an assignment TODAY!!!  So, I am praying that God will save Becky through the study of His Word.  This is REALLY exciting to me!!! Pray God saves her!

I got this from one of our students who is about to graduate Samford…

God has been breaking me and ruining me this year in ways I never thought possible. He’s successfully/completely ruined my plans of pursuing my own dreams, and has awakened in me a burden for the nations, a desire to make His name famous and glorious, and not the prideful selfish name of mine…which if you’d asked me a year ago, would have been completely absurd. The level of inadequacy I feel is great, but, God is so adequate and I’m honored and humbled that He uses flawed people to bring Him glory. Nuts. This year’s been a crazy ride.

Other than that, I had seperate conversations with…

*A college student about how he intends to use a particular field of study to make disciples among one of the most unreached muslim countries in the world upon graduation.

*A college student about him telling his unbelieving parents that the LORD was leading him to spend an extended amount of time overseas making disciples through the IMB Journeyman Program.

*3 separate college students who have been actively making-disciples through their sphere of influence on their university campus (greek-life, athletics, dorm life)!

*A college student who has been battling a particular sin since middle school (ie, 5+ years).  And, by God’s grace, he is beginning to take necessary steps of obedience, all in light of the goodness and glory of Jesus Christ!

I also received an email update from one of our former college small group leaders.  She recently graduated from college and signed up to spend 2 years on the mission field. She is in one of the most difficult countries in the world and is currently learning language/culture so she can effectively communicate the Gospel with those who have no access to it!

I heard from a handful of freshmen guys who are looking to connect to a College Small Group so that they can be equipped and encouraged by the Word to “make disciples of all nations”.

I could go on, but I have to go set up for Secret Church, which I am sure is going to be PACKED with college students who are coming to be taught/trained for 6hrs on the Doctrine of the Church!

    Unbelievable.

In case you think this is a result of clever planning and creative programming by yours truly…I assure you it is not. I am neither clever, nor creative.

Also, the above has nothing to do with events or programs we run through our College Ministry. I know this because we don’t run events or programs through our College Ministry.

And to be honest, most (if not all) of the above has little to do with individual ministry efforts from paid staff at Brook Hills (including me).

I am confident that what is mentioned above is the result of the Spirit of God doing the Work of God through the People of God!

    Praying for more…

  7. Collision

    by Britten Taylor

10/40 Window…Where urgent spiritual need collides with urgent physical need.

The 10/40 window is an area of the world that extends from West Africa to East Asia where there is great poverty and low quality of life, combined with little to no access to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    Currently in the 10/40 Window…

    • There is a total of 6,847 unreached people groups, 5,902 are in 10/40 Window countries. That means 86% of all unreached people groups are in the 10/40 Window.

    • An estimated 2.69 billion individuals living in approximately 5,902 unreached people groups are in the 10/40 Window.

    • The 10/40 Window contains the largest unreached people groups over one million.

    • The 10/40 Window contains the overwhelming majority of the world’s least evangelized megacities — that is those with a population of more than one million. The top 50 least evangelized megacities are all in the 10/40 Window!

    • The 10/40 Window contains four of the world’s dominant religious blocs. The majority of the followers of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, as well as the Non-Religious bloc lives within the 10/40 Window.

    • The 10/40 Window is home to the majority of the world’s poor. Of the poorest of the poor, more than eight out of ten live in the 10/40 Window. On average, they exist on less than a few hundred dollars per person per year. There is a remarkable overlap between the poorest countries of the world and those that are least evangelized.

    Game plan?  Pray, give, go.

To hear more about options for you to GO in 2011…plan to attend our College/Young Singles Global Lunch and/or our College/Young Singles Global Worship Gathering.

*Statistics were taken from Heart Cry Mission.

  8. Mid-Term Missions

November 1, 2010 by Britten Taylor

blog post was written by Paul A., Director of Mid-Term Mission at The Church at Brook Hills-

In the world today, there are 1.6 billion people with little to no access to the gospel of Jesus Christ. To us, this may be just an abstract number. But to others, this number represents moms and dads, brothers and sisters…real people who everyday are perishing and entering a real and eternal place called Hell. If you are like me, you may be thinking, this is such an enormous task! What can I possibly do? Can I as a college student really make a difference? The answer is YES!

In the summer of 1806, 5 college guys (MEN, its time to step up!) gathered in a college courtyard to talk about missions and while they were meeting, they were interrupted by a thunderstorm. To get out of the rain, they gathered under a haystack and began praying and dreaming about how God might use college students to reach the world for Jesus Christ.  This meeting was later known as the “Haystack Prayer Meeting” and led to the launch of the modern missions movement.

I believe that now, more than at any other time in history, college students are ready and able to make a significant impact for the kingdom of Christ. At The Church at Brook Hills we want to encourage every college student in our faith family to consider committing to mid-term missions.  Mid-term is a mission assignment that is more than 2 weeks, but less than 2 years.  That means we want YOU to seriously consider spending a summer, a semester, even a year or two serving Christ in a context with urgent spiritual and physical need!  Our Global team has recently expanded by hiring mid-term staff and their sole purpose is to serve you and walk alongside of you as you consider spending an extending amount of time globally in the mission of Christ.

Our Global Mid-Term Staff is in the process of putting together some incredible opportunities for both the summer and fall of 2011. We are working on developing opportunities in Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and also in a few of the urban centers around the United States.  The question I have for you is whether or not you will get out of your comfort zone, put your “yes” on the table, and get involved in what God is doing around the globe?  The need is great, the possibilities are endless, so I ask you to prayerfully consider how you will be involved in global disciple making in 2011?

The exciting news is that God is already at work all around the world. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Atheists, and people of every religion are being convicted of sin, repenting, and choosing to follow Christ.  At the same time, the apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to the church at Rome that the gospel is a Message that requires a messenger.  He writes, “ And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?(Rom. 10:14-15, ESV). Someone has to take the gospel to the 1.6 billion people who have not heard.

    Will it be you?

To hear more about Mid-Term Mission at Brook Hills come to the College/Young Singles Global Luncheon on Sunday, November 14th at 12:30pm (in the student building) and the College/Young Singles night of worship on Thursday, November 18th at 8pm (in the student building).
